OPPO launches first foldable smartphone, smart glasses and powerful new processor – Buzz.ie

OPPO has held its INNO DAY 2021 keynote, announcing the company’s first-ever, self-developed imaging neural processing unit, MariSilicon X along with Air Glass, an assisted reality device, and Find N, its first foldable smartphone.

The foldable was unveiled by OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau, who now has a key role at OPPO following the merger of the two firms announced this year.

Find N

Globally-renowned smart technology company OPPO’s first foldable flagship smartphone is called OPPO Find N.

The device houses a 5.49in outer display that unfolds into a 7.1in inner display with an 18:9 aspect ratio in landscape mode similar to most smartphones and unlike the odd square aspect ratio of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.

It uses a Flexion Hinge that allows the device to freely stand when unfolded at any angle between 50-120 degrees. This is hugely beneficial for video calls, vlogging and consuming video content.

The firm said the hinge is durable enough to be folded 200,000 times without breaking.

The inner display has a superfast 120Hz refresh rate display that uses LTPO tech to save battery life.

One of the biggest criticisms of Samsung foldables has been that the camera systems are not flagship standard.

OPPO Find N will not be launched in Ireland but hopefully the firm’s next foldable will be

OPPO Find N comes with triple-camera setup that comprises a 50MP Sony IMX 766 main sensor, 16MP ultra-wide lens and 13MP telephoto lens.

Find N uses the 2021 Snapdragon 888 mobile platform rather than the newer 888+ chip or next year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip.

The unit comes with a hefty 512GB of superfast UFS 3.1 storage and 12GB of RAM. It houses a 4500mAh battery and supports 33w fast charging.

There is also a 256GB/8GB configuration.

Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer of OPPO, enthused, “OPPO has invested a significant amount of time and effort into coming up with a better approach to a foldable smartphone, experimenting with a range of form factors, hinge designs, display materials and aspect ratios, to create a new device that meets the needs of more users.”

The phone is unlikely to be released in Europe but goes on sale in China on December 23 for the equivalent of €1,073, half the price of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Air Glass

OPPO has also announced a set of smart glasses called Air Glass.

Essentially Air Glass is a set of spectacles with an additional glass frame attachment that snaps on to the right hand side of the frame.

OPPO Air Glass

The frame houses a projector, motherboard, Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip, battery, WiFi and Bluetooth antennas, microphones and a speaker. There is no camera.

You control it by swiping the touch bar on the right side of the frame, as well as through hand gestures and head shakes. There is no wire on the device, just the snap-on attachment which pairs to your phone with Bluetooth.

There is no chance of this product going on sale in Ireland as for now Air Glass will receive only a limited release within mainland China early next year.

MariSilicon X

The firm also introduced a new neural processing unit called MariSilicon X, which is probably the product which will have most benefit for Irish and European …….
